Deutschlandsberg Unterer Platz
Competition
Deutschlandsberg is a beautiful city in the south-east of Austria famous for his castle and vineyards.
The competition ask for a solution for upgrade a small square bad connected with the historical centre, take a remedy for the traffic problem and use it as a place for the citizen.
Actually car traffic has changed the public space considerably even in historically districts. The aim is to regain a new quality of life.
In the project the area called in german “Begegnungszonen” make possible for public space to reflect its importance as an urban area of residence and at the same time maintain the essential functional space for mobility. The type of design conveys the equal juxtaposition of all road users, but also pedestrians enjoy a prerogative here.
Our vision for Deutschlansberg is a living urban centre where the traditional main place comes with the “young” place to a common public living space.
Decisive for the Square is that the traffic can not be stopped there. The transformation, however, emphasizes the character of the place. Concrete multifunctional and modular form elements create a three-dimensional landscape: seats, borders or guiding element that invites you to stay.
The change of pavement from dark asphalt to light broom concrete with an incised joint pattern (5X5m), the appearance of 3-dimensional elements at the edge of the road and an angular, unrounded driving area surprised, generates increased attention on approach and the readiness to maintain the prescribed speed. Pedestrians can basically use the whole place. The main lines cross the lanes in the narrowest possible places and are more brightly lit in the night than the common areas. There are areas to relax, which complement the offer of the public gardens.
The interaction of fortified urban areas with public and private zones, shady trees, a cooling water surface, but above all the equipment with differently combined angular seating and reclining furniture creates the atmosphere of a “young” square in the counterpoint to the traditional main square. The covering of brown-gray concrete slab of various formats underlines the friendly character of the space.
